Coming Together for 9/11 Day: A Meal Pack with Impact

Hannah Heald

Later this week, hundreds of volunteers from across Central Ohio will gather at The Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center to honor the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Together, we’ll pack approximately 75,000 healthy meals for families in need, all of which will be donated to the Mid-Ohio Food Collective for distribution locally.

The anniversary of September 11 will always be tied to tragedy, but it should also remind us of the unity that followed. In the days and weeks after the attacks, people across the country leaned on one another, supported neighbors and found strength in community. That same spirit lives on today through 9/11 Day, which has grown into the largest annual day of charitable service in the U.S.

This year, nationwide, more than 30,000 volunteers will participate in 9/11 Day Meal Packs across 25 cities, assembling nearly nine million meals for families facing food insecurity. Altogether, about 30 million Americans are expected to take part in the observance by volunteering, supporting charities or committing small acts of kindness.

It’s a powerful reminder that even in a moment of national mourning, service and compassion can – and should – be the path forward.

Here in Columbus, the event is now in its third year, and it has already become a meaningful tradition. The event is co-hosted locally by 9/11 Day, AmeriCorps, Mid-Ohio Food Collective, The Schottenstein Center and Kids Around the World. There’s also additional support from more than 20 companies and organizations across Central Ohio. Their contributions and the dedication of volunteers make it possible for us to come together and make a tangible difference in just a few short hours.

At MurphyEpson, we’ve had the privilege to support this event by coordinating with event partners, reaching out to the media and encouraging attendance from community leaders. Our team managed deliverables on deadline and ensured that no detail was left untouched. Our focus was creating opportunities for everyone to be a part of something meaningful. By staying organized and intentional, we are excited to continue to help amplify the impact of the event and create a space where everyone can serve and connect with their community members.

During one of our planning calls last week, I was deeply moved when we heard from the daughter of a first responder who lost his life on 9/11. Her story was a reminder that this isn’t just an event on the calendar – it’s about real people, real loss and a shared commitment to honor them through action. Now a teacher, she spoke about the power of giving back and how service can help carry forward her father’s legacy.

As we look ahead to 9/11 Day later this week, I feel grateful to play even a small role in something so meaningful. This is a chance to honor the legacy of 9/11 not only by remembering the lives lost but by carrying forward the spirit of unity and compassion that defined our often-divided country in its aftermath.

Together – with our partners, volunteers and neighbors – we’re turning remembrance into service, and service into hope for future generations.
