This past weekend, Ohio families felt the strain of uncertainty as federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits lapsed during the ongoing government shutdown. Approximately 1.4 to 1.5 million Ohioans receive SNAP benefits, which represents about 12% of the state's population. While a judge ruled against the Trump administration’s plan to halt payments, the situation remains precarious for those relying on food assistance.
Ohio leaders have responded by allocating $25 million through the Ohio Works First program to help families weather this gap. It’s an important step, but, as many have noted, just a drop in the bucket.
As we looked for ways to help, our team reached out to our longtime partners at Mid-Ohio Food Collective (MOFC). Their response was clear: every bit of support matters. Food donations to local pantries are always welcome, but financial donations stretch further, allowing MOFC to source and distribute food where it’s needed most.
More importantly, they encouraged us to keep the conversation hopeful. The key message was this: our ability to help one another is what will carry us through.
We’ve seen this spirit firsthand through the work of our clients and partners. Here are just a few examples:
When neighbors face hardship, compassion and collaboration make the difference.
ME is working on a food or financial donation effort within our agency. If you’re able, please consider contributing to Mid-Ohio Food Collective today. Your support (in any form) will help keep shelves stocked and families fed just ahead of the holidays.
