In 2026, organizations (both public and private) need to be constantly talking to their citizens, constituents, stakeholders and/or customers.
People expect transparency. They want clear explanations. They want to know not just what is happening, but why it matters and how decisions affect them. In a world where information moves instantly – and misinformation can move even faster – trust has become an organization's most valuable asset.
That's why World PR Day is about more than celebrating public relations; it's a reminder that effective communication is foundational to strong organizations and thriving communities.
At MurphyEpson, we believe trust isn't built through a single news release or media interview. It's earned through thoughtful, consistent communication over time.
Public relations is an important part of what we do. Building relationships with the media, telling compelling stories and protecting reputations all help organizations succeed.
But MurphyEpson is more than a PR agency.
We're a communications, engagement and public affairs firm that helps organizations navigate complex issues, build trust and strengthen relationships with the people they serve. Whether we're supporting economic development, guiding community engagement, explaining infrastructure projects or preparing leaders for difficult conversations, our work is rooted in one simple goal: helping people understand.
We help organizations:
- Translate complex issues into language people understand.
- Engage stakeholders before decisions are made.
- Build understanding around change.
- Prepare for challenges before they become crises.
- Develop communications strategies that support long-term goals – not just today's headlines.
I was struck by this quote in a recent story in Columbus Business First: "Companies need to work on gaining trust with the public long before they ask for something."
That applies to every organization.
One of the biggest misconceptions about public relations is that it's only needed during a crisis. In reality, organizations that navigate difficult moments most successfully are the ones that have invested in communication long before those moments arrive.
Trust is built through consistency. By showing up. By listening. By explaining decisions honestly. By communicating regularly – even when there isn't major news to share.
No organization's engagement team should ever say: "Things are quiet right now." No, that's when you should be listening. Connecting. Engaging.
When that foundation exists, organizations are better equipped to answer difficult questions, navigate uncertainty and maintain credibility when it matters most.
Public discourse is more polarized than ever, making this work harder – but also more important.
Our President & CEO Marie Keister says: "Silence is the worst strategy when our partners face controversy."
That means doing the work before controversy begins: knocking on doors, holding community meetings and talking with residents long before difficult decisions are on the table.
Our Senior Strategist Stephanie Tresso calls those conversations "deposits in the bank of goodwill." Will you be able to withdraw?
Many of our partners' biggest challenges are increasingly technical and interconnected.
Infrastructure. Economic development. Artificial intelligence. Transportation. Utilities. Community planning.
These issues shape communities, but they aren't always easy to explain.
One of our greatest responsibilities is helping subject matter experts communicate in ways that are clear, accessible and meaningful. When people understand why decisions are being made, they're more likely to engage thoughtfully, ask better questions and move conversations forward.
That's where we do some of our best work – bridging the gap between technical expertise and public understanding.
At its best, public relations isn't about generating attention. It's about creating understanding.
It's helping organizations earn trust, helping leaders communicate with confidence and helping communities have better conversations.
That's why MurphyEpson is more than a PR agency. We don't just tell stories – we help organizations build the trust that allows those stories to matter.
On this World PR Day, we're reminded that while the communications landscape continues to evolve, one principle remains constant: Trust is built one conversation at a time.
And that's work worth celebrating.
